  PROLOGUE: DAMIEN

The billionaire Damien Fields laid in his bed, a fat Cuban cigar pressed between his teeth, extending from his lips as it burned bright in the darkness. Purple silk sheets were draped across his abdominal muscles, hanging loosely off his legs. Beside him was Samantha, the grown version of his Little Sammy. It was the first time they had ever truly made love as adults, two souls sharing his bed, and he knew it would be the last. As the cigar smoke drifted from his lips, he looked at her face. She was no longer his Little Sammy. She had grown into her own. She had become a woman.

Her lovely features had once been vibrant and full of youthful glow, but now they were simply age lines buried beneath the Maybelline. The hair that used to stay in pigtails was teased, styled, and curved around her face.

He had given her everything she wanted for her thirtieth birthday. It wasn’t much to ask for after all the years they had spent together. She wanted one night with him as a woman. As much as it pained him to see her take her drop-seat pajamas off one final time and put on the black designer dress, he couldn’t take his eyes off her beautiful form when she stood before him in it. An artist couldn’t have carved one on a statue with more elegance and grace. She wore it perfectly as she walked into the restaurant on his arm.

She was stunning, eating caviar, drinking champagne, and coming into her own. The morning would be painful, but there would be time enough for that once the light pierced the window. The moment was all about her. They slept soundly in each other’s arms, two lovers caught in the afterglow. When morning came, Damien wasn’t prepared to say goodbye.

“I’m leaving now.” Samantha said as she placed her last suitcase next to the door.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” Damien asked as he walked over and put his arms around her waist.

“You know it is.” She smiled as her head leaned forward towards him.

“I’ll miss you, Sammy.” He kissed her lightly on the forehead.

“It’s Samantha now.” She nuzzled into his kiss and hugged him.

“I know.” Damien felt her pull from his embrace and pick up her suitcases. “But you’ll always be my Little Sammy.”

The door slammed and his Sammy was gone. She was reborn as Samantha. The years they had together were special. When the reality set in and he had his second drink before nine in the morning, he felt a huge hole in his heart. Damien drifted upstairs and looked in her room. It was filled with toys and a small bed, everything Sammy needed. He sat down on the edge of the bed and picked up her teddy bear, clutching it in his arms.

He lit up a cigar and then took his lighter to the stuffed animal. Within a few seconds it was engulfed in flames. He threw it on the floor and let it burn to a crisp, the smell of burnt plastic and fabric filling his nostrils, mixing with the sweet smell of his cigar.

He laid back in her bed and clutched her pillow, pulling it close as he smoked. The hole in his heart felt like it would last forever. He couldn’t imagine life without his Sammy. She was everything to him. Some might say their love was strange, but it was who he was. Sammy said that he was her savior, the man that taught her how to be a woman.

The memories were all he would have from that moment on. Once she closed the door and rode away in the backseat of her taxi, their relationship would be sliced apart. There was no thread strong enough to sew their love together again. It truly was the end. He stayed there for hours, tossing and turning until the sun set in the sky. He just wanted to be near the things she left behind. They were all he had left of his Little Sammy.

  PROLOGUE: JENNIFER

  Present Day

The sun set in the window of Jennifer’s tiny apartment. She was dressed to go out on the town. She was supposed to meet her friend in an hour and she still wasn’t ready. Jennifer quickly brushed up her makeup and adjusted the way her bra fit underneath her breasts. She lit a cigarette and grimaced when it peeled off a piece of her lipstick the first time she pulled it away from her lips. The white filter was nearly crimson from the stain. The lady at the counter had told her that wouldn’t happen. She decided to finish her cigarette before she tried to apply another layer.

She would have to keep putting it back on if she wanted her lips to look right after every smoke break she took. They came a lot more frequently once she had a few drinks in her. She casually looked at the stack of paper she was supposed to be working on over the weekend. She convinced herself there would be time enough for that the next day. She planned to get up early and finish it before her shift began. She might even get a chance to work on it after she got home that evening.

Jennifer didn’t have much. She finished high school and immediately went to work, completely skipping college. She thought she was smarter than all her friends who studied religiously all hours of the night while she earned money waiting tables. With most of them close to graduation with six figure jobs on the horizon, she didn’t feel quite as smart as she did when she chastised their choices. Once she moved out of her mother’s house, things got a lot harder.

/>   Waitressing wasn’t paying the bills, so she started looking for a real job. After getting turned away from a dozen interviews because she didn’t have a degree, or any plans to attend college, she finally applied at the one place she said she would never work. Her father slaved away for Billionaire Damien Fields until it left him in a heap on the floor, clutching his heart with the realization he wouldn’t see another day. That was what she believed anyway. When Mr. Fields offered her a job, she just couldn’t turn it down, even if it was driven by nepotism.

It was a position as one of his many secretaries. Most of them had college degrees, and weren’t thrilled to have a new girl who couldn’t properly format a letter join their ensemble of slavery. They didn’t care which brand of nepotism brought her in the door, they were determined to push her right back out of it. They timed her lunch breaks, smoke breaks, and even her bathroom breaks. Everything was documented in vivid detail and passed onto her supervisor, who sat her down every week to scold her for each minute she missed.

The situation depressed her, and after a month, she hated going to work. She couldn’t quit because it paid twice what she earned waiting tables, but the constant harassment killed her motivation more and more as each day passed. She had already been late two times and her supervisor said the next one would be a written warning which meant Mr. Fields himself would know how badly she had been treating the gift he gave her. That terrified her more than anything because he was known to be quite ruthless when his employees didn’t meet his expectations.

Jennifer caught a cab and made it to the bar two minutes past seven o’clock, finding her friends already upset. She apologized profusely to her best friend, Abigail, who had brought her new boyfriend Charles specifically to meet her. He seemed a little uptight, but he looked like he stepped out of an underwear catalog, so she knew exactly what Abigail saw in him. His handshake was strong and even his suit couldn’t hide the biceps trying to force their way out. Jenny and Abigail ordered wine. Charles ordered a beer. When the drinks came and Jennifer took her first sip, she wanted a cigarette, but Abigail didn’t smoke anymore, and running out the door after just arriving would be rude.

“So, what is your story, Charles?” Jennifer asked, trying to distract herself from the demand of her nicotine cravings as she took another sip from her glass of wine.

“He’s an investor.” Abigail beamed as she spoke before Charles had a chance to say anything.

“Yes, I am.” Charles parted his lips with a smile and his pearly white teeth nearly lit up the whole room. Jennifer was sure they were veneers.

“That’s shocking.” Jennifer winked at Abigail. “What is this, your fifth rich boyfriend this year?”

“Hey!” Abigail crunched her eyebrow and slapped Jennifer’s arm. “She’s kidding.” She said, giving Jennifer a friendly glare.

“I was going to say.” Charles laughed a little. “It’s only March. You’re my third girlfriend this year, and people say I get around. Five would make you a bigger slut than I am.”

“What!?” Jennifer’s mouth opened and her eyes grew wide as she looked over at Abigail.

“He’s kidding.” Abigail leaned towards Charles and ran her fingers down his sleeve before joining the bottom of her hand with the top of his.

“I am.” Charles rolled his hand over and clasped hers, bringing it up to kiss her index finger. “You’re only the second.”

Abigail pulled away and scooted towards Jennifer. She sipped her drink and gave Jennifer a light pat on the shoulder. “So, tell us about the new job. I was telling Charles that you work for the crazy billionaire now.”

“Why do you call him the crazy billionaire?” Jennifer asked as she looked from Abigail’s grin to Charles and his face grew dark.

“Mr. Fields and I have a bit of a history.” He picked up his beer and let it linger on his lips until he had guzzled half of it. “But he’s a very important man, and if he gave you a job, then you must be a very bright young lady.”

“Oh, she is.” Abigail moved back towards Charles. “She’s the only one of us who landed a great job without even a hint of college on her resume!”

Jennifer blushed. The road to her employment had not been an easy one. She didn’t want to admit that the only reason she had gotten the job was because of her father. If she didn’t have it, she would have never been able to meet Abigail at such a nice bar, nor would she have had clothes worth wearing through the front door. She had been loose with her money since getting the job, and had already maxed out one credit card, which allowed her to live a little above her means.

  “Uh oh.” Abigail’s mood soured.

“What?” Jennifer asked, following Abigail’s gaze, then her mouth opened and pursed together angrily.

Walking in the front door was a man with shaggy brown hair, a suit as nice as the one Charles had on, and a tie she recognized because she bought it for him. He was her ex-boyfriend, Michael, a guy she thought was going to be the love of her life until he hit her a few times, and cheated on her with one of their mutual friends. Just seeing his smiling face made her stomach sour even though a few months had passed.

“What is he doing here?” Jennifer snapped her words out through clenched teeth.

“No idea. Maybe he’s stalking you.” Abigail smiled, but it wasn’t a real one. She had as much disdain for Michael as Jennifer had.

“That’s not funny.” Before Jennifer could break her stares, Michael locked eyes with her and started their way.

“This won’t end well…” Abigail said.

  CHAPTER 1: MISTAKES

Jennifer groaned as she woke up. Her head was heavy from alcohol and her throat was thick with so much cigarette smoke it had turned into phlegm. She glanced over at her clock. It was only eight o’clock. That wasn’t bad for a Sunday. Her eyes flew open and she sat up suddenly. It wasn’t Sunday. She went out on Sunday, and if she was waking up, it was Monday. She scurried out of bed quickly. She was supposed to be at work already and she hadn’t even showered. She considered polishing herself up and rushing to work the way she was, but her hair stunk and her pores radiated with the stench of alcohol.

“What are you getting so worked up about?” A man’s voice pierced her panic.

“Michael?” She asked as he peered at her from under the covers. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“You invited me?” He pulled his perfectly tanned, muscular body free from the sheets and she saw he wasn’t wearing anything at all. His cock hung against the side of his leg, coated with the result of something she instantly regretted.

Jennifer looked down beneath her nightgown and realized she didn’t have on any panties. “No, no, no!” She shook her head.

She had done it again. Everything was ruined. She promised herself that she would never again sleep with him after he cheated on her. She should have thrown him out the first time his hand slapped her face, but she forgave that. Infidelity was something she couldn’t get past. The night began to come back to her in chunks. She had been out with Abigail and Charles. Michael came in. She tried to remember what happened after that, but all she could remember was shots being poured and going down her throat.

“You weren’t saying no last night when you had your mouth around my cock.” He flashed his smile which made his baby blues glimmer. They were what made her fall in love with him the first time, but he was poison. “You begged me to fuck you.”

“Get out! I’m late for work!” Jennifer ran to the bathroom and slammed the door.

She hoped he would find his own way out before she was ready for work. She stripped off her nightgown and got into the shower, washing away the odor from the night before. She scrubbed her vagina vigorously as the shower washed away her angry tears. She didn’t want any part of him in her, and she couldn’t believe she had let him into her life again. Once the shower was done, she realized precious time had been wasted. She was already in trouble for being late, and she wasn’t going to get off with just a tongue l
ashing. She was going to get a written warning and the next time she was late, she would be fired. There were no exceptions.

Jennifer ran out of the bathroom and Michael was gone. The only thing that lingered was a fresh smoldering cigarette in her ashtray. She hated the harsh smell of his full-flavored brand, but the second-hand smoke was enticing. Her body was craving one of her own, but she didn’t have time. She threw on her bra and slid into her panties. After making sure nothing was on backwards, she tossed a dress over her head. It was wrinkled and should have been ironed, but she didn’t have time. She took her makeup kit and brush, stuffing them into her purse as she locked her apartment door and ran to the bus stop.

When she got to work, the clock was already past eight-thirty. It wasn’t just tardiness, it was borderline egregious. She did the walk of shame to her desk. The bus ride had given her a chance to awkwardly apply her makeup between speed bumps, but it wasn’t her best work. She sat down and tried to type, looking for her daily assignment. She groaned as the realization flooded through her head. Her assignment was at her apartment. She was supposed to review the material and write a summary over the weekend so she could type it up and have it ready by nine. Not only was she late, she didn’t even have her work ready. She was certain she would be fired. Nine o’clock came and went, and then her supervisor, Mr. Adams appeared at her desk.

“Jennifer?” He tapped his fingers on the edge of his coffee cup. “Were you late today?”

“She was!” Anne, one of her coworkers chimed in. Of all the women that hated her, Anne was the leader and seemed to have the most disdain.

“Stay out if it, Anne.” Mr. Adams said. “Jennifer, please come to my office.”

Jennifer felt like a child in trouble, going to the Principal’s office as she followed Mr. Adams. She knew that she was going to be given a written warning if his last threat was sincere, and she had no reason to believe it wasn’t. Once they were inside, he closed the door. He sat down behind his big oak desk and tapped a few keys on his keyboard. After adjusting his glasses, which sat awkwardly on the end of his pudgy nose, he looked back at Jennifer.
